OTP Search

The LexisNexis® One Time Password (OTP) service lets you quickly verify the identity of an individual. The service sends a unique password to a telephone (voice or text message) or email address.

Before you begin this task:
Note The one-time password can be used only once and must be used within a certain time limit.
Note Depending on your product subscription, you may not have access to this search.
Procedure:
  1. Select how the password will be delivered to the customer from the drop-down list. The delivery method should already have been independently confirmed as being associated with the customer for a reasonable length of time. Before using any method, confirm that the customer is able to receive the password and read it back to you for verification. The following options are available:
    • Select SMS / Text Message to send a text message containing the password to the person's known and confirmed cellular phone.
      Note SMS (short message service) / text messages can be sent internationally.
    • Select Voice / Phone Call to send a voice message containing the password to the person's known and confirmed conventional or cellular phone.
    • Select Email to send an email containing the password to the person's known and confirmed email address.
    Your selection affects the wording that is displayed in following fields.
  2. Select the language that the password will be delivered in from the drop-down list.
  3. If you selected SMS / Text Message and want to send a SMS / text message to a person residing in another country, select the country.
    Note If you enter a phone number with an area code from one of the following five countries, then the country field automatically populates. If the area code is not recognized, then the country field default is the United States.
    • Bahamas
    • Canada
    • Jamaica
    • Puerto Rico
    • United States
  4. Depending on your initial delivery method selection, enter the information in the appearing field. You may see the following fields:
    • SMS / Text Message: Enter the phone number to which the one-time password message will be sent.
      Note The country code is not required.
    • Voice / Phone Call: Enter the phone number to which the one-time password message will be sent.
      Note The country code is not required.
    • Email: Enter the email address to which the one-time password message will be sent.
  5. To associate your search with a customer or a topic, provide a label (for example, the customer's name or a topic name) in the Reference ID field.
    The History function lets you view the searches that are associated with a reference ID.
    Note Your organization may require a reference ID in a particular format. Additionally, the contents of this field may be automatically completed or the field may have restrictions that are configured by your administrator.
  6. Click Continue.
    The one-time password is sent to the customer using the delivery method that you selected. The process may take a few minutes.
  7. Enter the one-time password that you receive from the customer, and click Verify.
    Tip To resend a new password using the same delivery method, click Resend Password.
Result:
  • If the verification is successful, then the following words appear, along with the Transaction ID and Reference ID (if provided): Verification Successful. Transaction has passed.
  • If the verification is unsuccessful, then the following words appear, along with the Transaction ID and Reference ID (if provided): Verification Failed! Invalid Password. Please try again.
After you complete this task:
  • If you entered the wrong code, then click Reverify.
  • To request another one-time password, click Resend Password.
